My seven-year old son Luke needed major surgery when he was five-weeks old at All Children's Hospital. Since I lived nearby, I did not need to use the services of RMH, but always thought it was a wonderful organization. When Luke was three years old, his preschool raised money for St. Jude's Hospital, and he loved helping so much that he asked if he could give some toys to sick kids.
We gathered some toys for RMH, and took them to the East House. We were warmly greeted, he was thanked very sweetly and had his picture taken. Thrilled to bits, he asked to give toys again and again. On one trip, we met a family from out west and bonded with them. We took them to story time at the library, got burgers at El Cap's, and made a special gift basket for the little girl who couldn't share toys with others due to a compromised immune system. Even though Luke's early illness did not put us in touch with RMH, his affinity for sick kids led me to volunteering, and for that, I am very grateful.
As a house shift volunteer, I have met courageous parents who persevere through such pain that it humbles me and makes me grateful for my blessings. I have gotten to know the committed staff who have such big hearts, and who take each triumph and each sadness to heart. I know that I am nothing special by myself with my minor contribution of time and empathy, but I help make up a very special healing place for parents in their darkest hour of need. It has been my privilege and honor to serve, and I have learned so much from the families, the staff and the other love-filled volunteers.
